How Sanhu House Matches You with Your Perfect Postpartum Doula
Finding a postpartum doula isn't like booking a hotel room. The person who comes into your home after one of the most transformative experiences of your life needs to be the right fit - not just qualified, but genuinely right for you, your family, your recovery, and even your dog. At Sanhu House, we don't hand you a list and wish you luck. We match you. Here's exactly how that process works.
Why Doula Matching Matters More Than Most People Realise
Most people searching for postpartum support focus on credentials. Does she have experience with newborns? Does she know about breastfeeding? Is she certified? These things matter - but they're the baseline, not the whole picture.
What makes postpartum care actually work is fit.
A doula who is wonderful with a highly anxious first-time mum navigating a C-section recovery is not necessarily the right match for a laid-back second-time mum who just wants someone warm to help with the baby while she showers. A night-shift specialist who thrives at 3am with a screaming newborn might feel like too much energy during gentle morning routines. Someone trained in traditional Korean sanhujori practices — the warmth, nourishment, and rest rituals that form the foundation of our care philosophy — brings a different depth of expertise than someone who simply offers "support."
When the fit is right, postpartum care feels effortless. When it's wrong, it adds friction to an already hard season.
That's why matching is one of the most important things we do.
The Sanhu House Matching Process: Step by Step
Step 1: Your Initial Consultation Call
Everything starts with a conversation — not a form, not a chatbot. You'll speak with a member of our care team, someone whose entire job is to understand your situation, ask the right questions, and begin building a picture of what your postpartum support should look like.
During this call, we'll cover:
Your due date, birth plan, and any known or anticipated medical considerations (C-section, VBAC, twins, NICU risk, etc.)
Your living situation — who else is at home, including partners, older children, and pets
Your recovery priorities: rest, feeding support, emotional wellbeing, sanhujori rituals, or all of the above
What kind of care you need and when — daytime only, overnight, or full wraparound coverage
Any insurance or employer benefits you'd like to use, including Carrot Fertility (Sanhu House is a Carrot-certified provider)
Your personality and communication style — whether you want a doula who feels like a trusted professional in the background, or someone who slots comfortably into the rhythm of your home like a member of the family
There's no pressure, no pitch. This call is genuinely about understanding you.
Step 2: Your Care Coordinator Builds the Match
After your consultation, your dedicated care coordinator gets to work. They review your profile against our full roster of Sanhu House-trained doulas - each of whom has a deep foundation in evidence-based postpartum care and is trained in the sanhujori practices that make our care distinctive: belly-binding, warming therapies, nourishing meal preparation, rest rituals, and more.
Your coordinator considers:
Clinical background and specialisations (C-section recovery, lactation, newborn care, PPD/PPA support)
Sanhujori training depth and specific ritual expertise
Personality type and communication style
Household experience - comfort with older children, pets, varying family dynamics
Availability for your requested shifts and coverage window
Carrot or insurance certification status if relevant
For most families, we assign two doulas rather than one — so you have consistent, coordinated coverage across shifts without losing continuity of care.
Step 3: The Virtual Intro Meeting
Before care begins, you meet your matched doula (or doulas) on a virtual call. This isn't a formality — it's a meaningful part of the process.
You'll have the chance to ask questions, get a feel for their approach, and make sure the connection is there. If it's not, we go back and find a better fit. The goal is that by the time your baby arrives and your care begins, you already feel comfortable. You already feel cared for.
This meeting also gives your doula a chance to learn more about your home, your preferences, and anything specific they should know before day one.
Step 4: Care Begins
Whether you've chosen The Stay (our luxury postpartum retreat at Oceana Santa Monica), The Care (in-home support), or The Nights (overnight doula coverage), your matched care team shows up prepared. They know your birth story, your recovery goals, and what kind of presence you need from them.
Throughout your care, the Sanhu Circle — our coordinated 24/7 WhatsApp support system — keeps you connected to your broader care team, including your doulas, any specialist providers (IBCLC, herbalist, therapist), and your care coordinator. You're never reaching into a void.
Two Mothers. Two Very Different Matches. Both Exactly Right.
The best way to understand how this works is to see it in action.
Match One: Emma
Emma is 34, expecting her first baby, and has just found out she'll need a planned C-section. Her husband is supportive but travels for work, and her family is based overseas — there's no one nearby who can step in. She and her husband have a rescue greyhound named Biscuit, who is gentle but needs to feel at ease with new people in the home. Emma is anxious. She wants to feel held. She wants expertise, round-the-clock coverage, and someone who understands that C-section recovery is a different physical journey than a vaginal birth.
For Emma, we matched a two-doula team — one senior and one experienced specialist — both of whom have extensive backgrounds in C-section postpartum recovery. They're trained in appropriate sanhujori adaptations for C-section mums: belly-binding techniques modified for surgical incision recovery, warming therapies, and the nourishing meal traditions that support healing from the inside out. Both have worked in homes with dogs, and both came warmly recommended for their calm, reassuring presence with first-time mums navigating new parenthood without family nearby. Biscuit approved.
Emma has day and night coverage, seamlessly coordinated between her two doulas, so she never feels alone at 4am, and never has to manage a handoff.
Match Two: Priya
Priya is 38 and expecting her second baby. Her three-year-old, Lila, is at home and will be meeting her new sibling. Priya had a great first postpartum experience and knows what she's doing — she doesn't need intensive support or expert intervention. She's planning a home birth and has a wonderfully relaxed approach to the whole thing. What she wants is simple: a few hours each morning, someone who can hold the baby while she showers, help with breakfast, maybe do a gentle tidy of the kitchen, and genuinely enjoy being part of the family. She wants warmth, not intensity.
For Priya, we matched one of our junior doulas — someone in her mid-twenties who radiates easy warmth, loves to be in the kitchen, and doesn't bat an eye at folding laundry or wiping down the hob. She's great with toddlers, comfortable with the relaxed rhythm Priya is after, and brings genuine joy to the early morning hours. Lila loves her. The match was made in about ten minutes.
When the Right Doula Changes Everything
Postpartum recovery is one of the most vulnerable seasons of a person's life. The people who are present in your home during those weeks will shape how you feel about yourself as a new parent - not just whether you're getting enough sleep (though that matters enormously), but whether you feel seen, supported, and held.
The right match isn't a luxury. It's the whole point.
At Sanhu House, our doulas are trained not just in clinical postpartum care but in the sanhujori traditions that have supported new mothers in Korea for centuries - the belief that warmth, rest, and deep nourishment in the early weeks create the foundation for long-term healing. Every doula on our team carries that philosophy into every home they enter.
But a doula who is extraordinary in the right context can feel mismatched in the wrong one. That's why we take matching seriously, and why we make it a human process rather than an algorithm.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I reach out to Sanhu House?
We recommend reaching out during your second trimester — ideally around 20–28 weeks. This gives us time to understand your needs properly, find the right match, arrange your virtual intro meeting, and confirm your care team before your due date. We do work with families who reach out later, but availability is limited, particularly for in-home overnight coverage.
What if I don't feel a connection with my matched doula during the intro call?
Tell us. That's exactly what the virtual meeting is for. If the fit isn't there, we go back to the roster and find a better option. Your comfort and confidence in your care team is not negotiable — we'd rather spend another week finding the right person than have you start care feeling uncertain.
Can I request a doula with specific experience, like C-section care or lactation support?
Absolutely. This is one of the most important pieces of information you can share during your initial consultation. We'll prioritise matching you with a doula whose training and experience directly address your specific needs. If you need IBCLC-level lactation support in addition to doula care, your coordinator can also arrange for a specialist to be part of your broader care team.
Does my Sanhu House doula work alone, or as part of a team?
For families with extended or round-the-clock coverage, we typically assign two doulas so shifts are covered consistently. Your care coordinator ensures both doulas are fully briefed on your situation and communicate with each other - your Sanhu Circle WhatsApp group keeps everyone connected. For shorter, more limited engagements, a single doula may be appropriate.
Is Sanhu House covered by insurance or employer benefits?
Sanhu House is a Carrot Fertility-certified provider. Many clients receive significant reimbursement through Carrot or other employer fertility and family benefit programmes. We can help you understand what your benefits may cover before you book — just mention it on your consultation call, and we'll flag which members of our care team hold the right certifications to qualify.
What areas does Sanhu House serve?
We currently serve Los Angeles and Orange County, both for in-home care (The Care and The Nights) and our luxury retreat experience.
What makes Sanhu House different from booking a doula independently?
When you book a doula independently, you're responsible for vetting, interviewing, and managing the relationship yourself. If it doesn't work out, you start over. At Sanhu House, you have a care coordinator whose job is to get the match right, a trained team with consistent sanhujori philosophy, wraparound specialist access through the Sanhu Circle, and the infrastructure to support you before, during, and after your care begins. You're not just getting a doula - you're getting a care system built around your recovery.
Ready to Find Your Match?
Your fourth trimester deserves the same intention you've put into everything else. Whether you're expecting your first baby or your third, navigating a complicated delivery or a straightforward one, we'll find the person — or team — who's right for you.
